Bismarckia nobilis

The mature hemispherical canopy, 20 to 25 ft. X 20 to 25 ft., develops before the trunk starts forming. When mature, 6 to 12 ft. of trunk, a gray/brown wood, will expose itself from the frond bases (boots) which will begin to fall. Self-cleaning thereafter. Becoming increasingly popular. One of the most desirable palms for use in subtropical landscapes.

Common Name: Bismarckia Palm
Origin: Madagascar
Typical Height: 30 to 60 ft. under cultivation
Stem: Gray to brown, 16 to 28 in. diameter, solitary
Leaf: Dense crown of silver to blue, round fan leaves up to 8 in. across, carried on 4 to 6 in. petioles
Fruit: Fruits are 1½ in. wide, brown when ripe, and rounded. Seeds germinate in 4 to 8 weeks.
Cultivation: Caution should be taken to avoid disturbing the root system when installing. Field trees are usually root-pruned or heeled in after digging to prevent transplant shock. Responds well to frequent watering; drought-tolerant once established. Full sun, plenty of room. Difficult from seed because the specialized ‘root’ will grow as long as 24 in. before it swells and sprouts. Hardiness Zones 9-11
